Introducing the pups

I realized I have not officially introduced my pups on my blog before.  I think they are the best dogs on the face of the earth and absolutely love them to pieces!  Here are their intros...

Dixie
Dixie is a mini Australian Shepherd and is 3 1/2 years old now.  My Aunt Nanci had a standard Australian Shepherd named Shiloh that I absolutely loved- he was a black tri and before I even knew much about dogs, I knew I loved Shiloh.  He was a black tri, had lots of energy and the sweetest temperament you've ever seen.  Loved that dog.  When my husband and I first got married we lived in a small house with a small yard, so our goal was to get a small to medium-sized dog to fit our small to medium-sized living arrangements.  I loved aussies but knew a standard was a little too big for our situation, so I had resigned myself to the fact that we needed to find another breed.  I was estate-saleing one day with my friend Hannah when we came upon the tiniest blue merle aussie puppy.  I was, of course, gushing over the puppy since it was the cutest little furball I'd ever seen, but when the owner said the words "Mini Australian Shepherd" I about fell over!  You mean, there's a small version of my favorite breed?!  Genius!

The hunt was on for a mini aussie!  My husband will tell you that I am a fairly motivated person in general, but when I have a mission... look out!  I can border on OCD side at times.  I scoured the internet for good breeders, the genetic abnormalities within the breed and what breeders should do to have their breeding stock certified.  Long story short, I spent a loooong time trying to find the right puppy!  I went from black tris to red merles- the whole gammut!  Until one day I came across a breeder in Oklahoma who just had a litter of puppies from Buck and Macy (I still remember the parents' names).  I saw this sweet face and I swear, time stood still....

Although I really saw us getting a black tri, she was JUST like the puppy I saw who had inspired me to get a mini aussie in the first place- I thought... it must be fate!  I immediately called the breeder to feel them out, loved them and we set up a time to meet halfway.  They were going to bring "Dink", as she was currently named and her brother Max who they said had a really sweet temperament.  She cost more since she was a blue merle with blue eyes, so I prepared Charles for the fact that we might get her even though signs seemed to point elsewhere.  When we got there the kids were telling us all about the two pups- their main description of Dink was that she REEEEALLY liked to play.  When it came to Max... he was sweet, easy going, loveable... you get the picture.  They were pretty much trying to persuade us to get Max since he was clearly the more amiable pup.  HOWEVER once I looked into those sweet blue eyes, I had to have Dink.

Prior to meeting her, I had my heart set on naming her "Stella".  She was going to be a sweet, smart, loyal girl, just like all the aussies I'd read about.  On the way home, Charles mentioned that based on the breeders description of her, a sweet name like Stella may not fit the bill.  He suggested "Dixie", which I said was cute, but we would feel her out over the next few days to see which one fit her best.  She slept in my arms on the way home and slept for the next day or so, which I figured was totally her temperament, not the fact that she was in a totally new environment- pfffssshh!!

Low and behold, our sweet little furball turned into a spicy little puppy with more energy than I knew what to do with!  She grew sharp little needle teeth and would nip at anything within reach.  I would come home on my lunch break every day to take her for a walk, and she would nip at my feet to the point where they would bleed.  One night I remember breaking down because I didn't know what to do with this little pirranha of a pup!  Over time she grew out of the nippy-puppy stage and started to become trainable and sweet....

Fast forward 3 and a half years and we have a still-somewhat-spicy, but beautiful, sweet young lady!  She loves to play but also loves a good cuddle.  She is ridiculously smart- I often say she could probably speak other languages without ever having been taught!  I know she is capable of much more training than I have given her, but luckily we have a huge yard where she can run to her heart's content to get rid of some of that energy!  We love her to pieces and can't imagine our life without her!  She has a big sister, Belle, who I will introduce in a later post- she is Dixie's cheese to her macaroni!

Stay tuned for Belle's introduction- I've written enough for now!!

 Waiting for squirrels....

Among the grasses- see had a Dixie-sized spot worn into the bushes :)

Loves her daddy

Party pup!

Pup of the Week: Sophie

Name: Sophie Loren Adams, but I go by Sophie. Mom calls me Soph, Toot, Booger, or Sugar sometimes though.

Age: 17 months, I was born on Valentine's Day and Mom and KayKay picked me up on Easter!
Breed: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel...Cavie for short
Owner: Beth Adams
Hometown: Austin, Texas

Favorite toy: I love any toy that I can rip apart in a matter of 2 days. Mom then throws them away, I get annoyed but know I will soon get a new one!

Favorite Food: Heart Hearthy Chews from Sprouts...us Cavies have a tendency to have heart problems, so I hope these help with preventing any problems!

Pet Peeve: I can't pick just one, I am a priss. I hate when I get left outside for too long, I am not a big fan of these big dogs that walk past my house in which I don't get to go outside and play with (I bark a lot at them and Mom doesn't like that), I can't jump on the beds and that really annoys me so Mom always has to lift me up, I don't like when the groomer trims my bum, and last but not least - I especially don't like when Mom has friends over and they don't pay attention to me, how rude.

Favorite Pastime: When I hear the word "walk" I get super excited, its my favorite part of the day. This rain has been crampin my walking style lately. I love to sunbathe and lounge on the top of the couch (I can see all the exciting things going on outside from there!). I love to snuggle on the couch with my Mom while she watches horrible television shows.

Naughtiest Deed: Tearing all the stuffing out of my toys...I do this only because I know as soon as I rip it out I will get a new one! And I snore really loud too and let tooty silent stinkers. Classy.

What your pet means to you:
Sophie is the sweetest and happiest little furry bundle of joy and loves everyone! I love when I get home and see her tail wagging so fast and she is so excited to see me! She really is so sweet and loving, I have never heard her growl ever! She is incredibly submissive, so it is funny to watch her with other dogs...tail goes under her and she gets low to the ground! I just love my little Soph!

Pet Peeve: Eating hangers...drives me nuts when Jack constantly drags hangers out of my closet and eats them!

Favorite Pastime: Sleeping in "Big Bed" and eating every single ball he can find....all the balls from the baby's ball machine are now official eaten! golf balls, tennis balls, plastic balls, soccer balls. Jack LOVES balls! ;) ...o and Jack loves to play with his baby brother!

Naughtiest Deed: eating my most fabulous shoe ....shoes that are (or should i say were) so fabulous .... i would only wear them once a year for New Years!
What your pet means to you: The WORLD and then some!

Front Porch Dogs

One of my favorite things about Etsy is getting to chat with some of the fabulous pet lovers that buy my bowls.  Take Darlene Pigman, for example, owner of Front Porch Dogs in Sebring, Florida.  In addition to growing her new pet store (featuring homemade treats made from ingredients from her farm), she has also been an RN for 25 years and works as a flight nurse with the trauma helicopter program out of Tampa.  How's that for multi-tasking?!

Darlene requested a bowl with her store's logo.  Having never done this before, I asked her to send me the logo, I printed it out, affixed it to a chair... and viola!  Now all of her furry customers can grab a drink on their way into the store and know exactly where they are ;)  I plan on offering custom logo bowls to other pet store owners thanks to Darlene's fabulous idea!

Here is a little Q&A with Darlene...

How long have you been in business?  "I started making my own treats in Feb '09 and was selling them in my sister-in-law's gift store. When the storefront next to her store became vacant, I moved in and expanded."

Where are you located?  "My store is located in Historic Downtown Sebring, FL. Sebring is approx 1 hr south of Orlando."

What type of products do you carry?  "The product I feature the most is homemade treats. I have a farm so the ingredients for the treats come mostly from the farm i.e. honey, eggs (cookies) and lamb (lamb jerky). Also I get fresh frozen bones from my butcher. These bones are from grass fed cows in Ocala, FL. I also carry high end dog/cat food and all the cute things that go with having a four legged friend."

Why did you choose to open a pet store?  "My brother and sister-in-law have a very successful kennel and treat store in Canada and I envied their work, so I decided to start (on a much smaller scale) what they do. I won't be setting up a kennel, but instead I have taken my classes and finished my internship in canine hydrotherapy. So hopefully, I can set up a pool soon and swim dogs for exercise and rehab."

Tell us about your pets:  "I currently have 4 dogs (labs), 2 horses, 16 chickens, 30 sheep, 2 cats and 1 african grey parrot."

BVP's Back!!!

At long last I have more time to focus on my little love, Bella Vita Pet! I will be making a few changes over the next few weeks including disabling my website and using my blog as my main site for Bella Vita. Since I am selling mostly on Etsy now it just makes sense to have a fun way to communicate with my friends and followers!  To kick things off I am offering a contest to win any 2 pieces:  a chair & water bowl, a bench and chair- you choose any 2 you want!  Read at the bottom of this posting for details on how to enter!

A recent bit of good news is that Dog Bed Works is now selling my chairs through their website. It took a couple months to get all the pictures, styles and details migrated to their site and I'm happy to report that it is up and running now. Click here to view my chairs on their site!

I also may be featured soon on People Magazine's Pets website, peoplepets.com. Believe you me, you'll know if and when I do get featured :)

The other bit of exciting news is that I am (finally) working on a large 2-bowl bench feeder. I get many emails from Etsy members asking for a larger version of my bench feeders... so at long last I am happy to say it is in the works and should be available in the next month or two!

I'm also going to be introducing many new fun styles using some awesome flat sheet wrapping paper I found at Paper Source- best. store. ever.

DRAWING DETAILS
All you have to do to be entered in the drawing is follow my blog!  Click "Follow" in the top right-hand corner of this page.  All followers as of midnight on Friday, May 28th will be entered to win any two Bella Vita Pet pieces!  You can get them for your pups or they make wonderful gifts!  If you have any questions, please email me at bellavitapet@gmail.com.  Winner will be announced by Monday, May 31st.
